You now how children are. They see something, and they immediately request that they have it. It doesn’t matter what it is. Whether it’s a car or a doll, a backpack or truck, they must have it, and they must have it now. Urgency is of the utmost importance to them, for whatever the reason.
Toddler backpacks come very in handy, especially when your little one has to go do daycare. It’s an ideal place to put the child’s lunch, crayons, or whatever items he or she may need. Fortunately, manufacturers have come with all sorts of fun ideas to make the bags more appealing to children. Funny shapes and vibrant colors turn a simple backpack into something desirable by children.
A guide to choosing the best toddler backpacks
Whenever you go to a store, you don’t know where to start. Choosing the right one is not difficult, but you must always remember that you have three-year-oldwith shifting tastes. The secret is to pay attention to what your child loves, but not only at the moment. Something that he or sheconsiders a favorite, some sort of long-term commitment.
However, don’t forget about the practical aspects of the item. No matter how much your child wants something, you must first decide if that particular item meets the right criteria.
Number of straps. Are they padded?
There is a trend going around that promotes single straps backpacks. No matter how appealing they may seem, you must keep in mind that they are not at all healthy for your child’s back. Why? Because the weight of the backpack will not be distributed evenly, which will lead to backaches, shoulder and neck pains. In the long run, this will affect the child’s spine, which I presume you want to avoid.
Padded straps are recommended because they will be able to support the weight better. Pure fabric will modify its width which will cause injuries. But a strong, padded strap will maintain its shape no matter how heavy the backpack may be.
Honestly, when I was a child, I don’t remember packs being so heavy as they are now. I don’t know what they put in them, but at times they give me the feeling that they will break a child’s back. A toddler backpack is designed for someone smaller, so the weight is not as high. However, this is not something to overlook. There is even an ideal weight for the bag recommended by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. According to the Academy, the weight of the backpack should not exceed 15% or 20% of the child’s weight. But the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that anything exceeding 10% can be consideredharmful to the child.
The right fit
There are a few hints that will help you see if a backpack is right for your child. For example, the length of the bag (the bottom) should never go beyond the lower back. More than 4 inches below the waistline is too much. So anything between these two points is perfect. As far as adaptability goes, you should place the straps in such a way that they meet the backpack one or two inches below the top of the shoulders.
I highly recommend a backpack that has a waist belt. If it is correctly adjusted, this strap will take some of the load off the back. Now, the weight will have three points of distribution, not only two. Also, securing the backpack, making it more stable, will ease your child’s job to carry it.
Does it have a safety harness?
A lot of people make fun of this safety harness and compare it to a leash. They are not very far from the truth. It does indeed resemblea leash, and it has the same purpose. To keep your child near you at all times. However, it also has a practical use. If you are walking with your child in a crowded zone, the harness will make you feel more relaxed because the chances of losing your toddler are slim to none. We all know how children are. They want to run everywhere and towards anything. But the harness will prevent that from happening.
Is it machine washable?
Now, if the backpack you want is not machine washable, you can just forget about it. I once saw a toddler putting half an icecream straight into the bag because he wanted to take some home to his baby brother. That is very sweet and a sign of good parenting, but you can imagine the bag. If in cases like these you cannot put the bag into a washing machine, let’s just say that it will not be agreat day for you. Sure, you can wash it by hand with some detergent, but it will take you longer, and the drying will last forever if it’s cold outside. Do yourself a favor and pay attention to this small detail. Machine washable is to be preferred.
I don’t want you to believe that these recommendations are silly and that a backpack is a backpack. There is more to it. These details will decide if your child will have a correct posture in the future. There is something in it even for you. They are not random advice. They are meant to save your child a lot of trouble in the future, and you too.
Once you have checked all these things off your list, you can proceed into buying one of the best toddler backpacks you can find. After all, I am sure your little one has already out his or her eyes on something.
What are the best toddler backpacks?
As long as your choice meets the criteria I mentioned above, you should be in the green zone. Keep in mind, though, to also listen to your child and his or her preferences. Even if they are small, your kids will have their own personality and taste. If you are going to respect that, they will develop nicely.
Yodo Upgraded Toddler Backpack with Safety Harness
If your child is attracted by dinosaurs, puppies or cows, then this backpack is perfect for him or her. It comes in three versions, for each kind of animal. But it has these vibrant colors that will attract any child. It’s cute seeing it on the back of any kid.
The material it’s made of is very easy to clean, but it is also BPA and Phthalate free. The manufacturer knows how important is for you to have no harmful substances around your child, which is why the backpack is FDA qualified. There are thousands of products out there that are made of noxious plastics. But this one is completely safe.
As far as the features go, the Yodo backpack comes with a 50-inch tether that can be safely secured at the bottom. It makes it very useful for walks in crowded places. Lost children is a complete tragedy, even if it’s for 5 minutes. A harness will save you all that horrible experience. Just attach it, and you will make sure that your child is around you at all times. The carabiner is metal, so you don’t have to worry that it will give in easily.
The food and drink that you put in this backpack will stay cold for about three hours because the lining is insulated. There is enough space there to pack a lunch and a beverage. If you have other things you need to put in the backpack, you can always put the bottles on the side, in the 2 mesh pockets.
The backpack is completely machine washable. It will not decolor or suffer damage as long as you follow the instructions on the label. Stains come right off, you don’t have to use heavy chemicals. If an accident happens, depending on the food that gets spilled, you will be able to wipe it with a wet cloth.
The straps are padded, and they can be extended long enough for one of the parents to carry the backpack whenever the child gets tired. There is also a label on the back to write contact information in case of loss.
If I were to search for a flaw, I would go for the harness. The part that goes on the adult’s hand is a bit tight. It would have been nice to be wider, but other than that the Yoda is ideal. Click here to read more reviews and buy on Amazon.
Coolwoo Toddler Backpack
The one thing that it’s certain is that children like animals. That is why manufacturers make almost all backpacks shaped as cute doggies or cats or whatever animal. Make them have a pair of ears and a nose, and you are bound to have success.
The Coolwoo backpack is also made of neoprene, which I believe you know what it means. That makes the bag water resistant. It is perfect if you and your child get caught in the rain. Water can ruin not only food, but when your kid also has coloring books and crayons in there, it can turn into something nasty.
But if water cannot get in, it cannot get out either. I always hated that if I spilled something in my backpack, my back would immediately get wet. With this bag, that is no longer an issue. The contents of a water bottle will remain in the bag until it’s eliminated.
This too is BPA free, Phthalate free, PVC free, and PD free. The environmental pass is not an issue. There are padding on the straps, back, and all over really. The entire bag is soft to the touch, which makes it look cute. The padded back, however, as thick and soft as it may be, it’s made in such a way that will not make your child sweat. The material is breathable.
The Coolwoo does not have a harness, I’m afraid. So it’s ok to store a few items for your toddler, but if you are planning on taking a walk in crowded areas, please pay attention to him or her, or take other measures of protection. Click here to read more reviews and buy on Amazon.
This one it’s not as cute as the other two. It has a nice design overall, but my guessis that the manufacturer produced this item more for the practicality of it. It is made of a combination of nylon and polyester, which makes it simple to clean and dry. Sturdiness is not an issue. It will last for years if that is the case. Inside space is satisfactory, nothing to argue about.
What I wanted to tell you about this product, and what makes it worthy of a review, is the tether. A lot of people complain that most backpacks have a stiff harness. It’s nothing wrong, but there can be better. This one, for example, has a simple, but a brilliant, shock absorbing feature. If you have used a backpack with a harness before, then you know that the moment your child starts running, when the length of the harness is fully extended, your kid can fall on his face. That is terrible. It doesn’t happen every time, but it does happen. But with a shock absorbing harness that will never occur. The stop will not be so sudden. The harness also swivels, which means it will not get tangled.
The very well-designed harness makes Brica By-My-Side my number one recommendation when it comes to toddler backpacks. From where I stand, the safer one item is, the better. Safety is number one priority for any parent, which is why you tend to buy things thinking only of your child’s safety. It doesn’t bother me that the backpack is not the most colorful. You can also place stickers and such on it. But the safety feature is what makes the Brica bag the best toddler backpack. Click here to read more reviews and buy on Amazon.
If you are a first-time toddler backpack shopper, I bet you thought that choosing one was going to be a lot easier, right? All parents make that mistake until they realize that every item they buy, every decision they make, can eventually affect their child one way or the other. With that in mind, you are going to be a lot more careful than before when making purchases. Click here to buy on Amazon
